How to Stop Counterfeit Cannabis Products

Lucid Green is committed to driving trust and transparency in the cannabis industry. As part of this commitment, we aim to help consumers know that the product they purchase is authentic.  By authentic, we mean it is a true product manufactured by the brand that has gone through an independent laboratory set of tests to produce a certificate of analysis (COA).

When you scan a LucidID you can get verification that the product is authentic from the cannabis brand.

Once scanned, you can get other important information including product details, reviews, and test results, but the “Product authenticity verified!” message at the top should give cannabis consumers an immediate trust factor. If the product is not authentic, a simple scan of the (fake) LucidID will notify the consumer immediately:

Unfortunately, there is a significant amount of counterfeiting of cannabis, even to the extent that you can find QR codes on fake cannabis packages.

When brands use LucidIDs, each QR code is unique to the individual product unit. So each individual unit is validated. Many fake products carry QR codes and in many instances all of the QR codes are the exact same codes even for different strains. Clearly they aren't from the same batch, so shouldn't they have different test results (which the QR code reveals)?

There have been some interesting conversations and comments on Reddit on this subject. Here is an example of one:

Multiple dealers from here in prohibition land USA have “legal” vape carts that are QR code scannable and refer to a website to verify. I doubt it is legitimate, because nothing black market (in my limited hypothetical experience) is 100% legit. Anyone care to shed some light on this phenomenon / had similar experiences?

The LA Times covered this problem a couple of years ago, as well.

“As it became clear that someone was counterfeiting the Kingpen brand, Loudpack Farms spent $2.5 million on new packaging and hardware last year to distinguish it from the knockoffs.”

“The counterfeit market started replicating what we were doing almost as quickly,” said Daniel Corral, head of sales at the Monterey County firm.

The problem still persists. LucidIDs solve the issue because each LucidID is dynamically created by the cannabis brand. They control what cannabis brands put on their packages and while physical images can be replicated, once a LucidID is scanned by a consumer, it will not yield a  “Product authenticity verified!” message and instead will provide an alert that the product can not be authenticated:

Lucid Green provides solutions to protect brands from having their products counterfeited. LucidIDs keep consumers from being duped into purchasing fake products. Trust products that carry LucidIDs.
