Why Your LucidID QR Codes are Safe

Most of you know what QR (quick response) codes are, but just in case you do not, here is a quick explanation. A QR code is a type of barcode that can be read easily by a digital device, such as a smartphone, and stores information as a series of pixels in a square-shaped grid. When scanned with a phone’s camera, a user is prompted to open a website page in a browser. As stated on Wikipedia, “the QR code system was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara from the Japanese company Denso Wave ...  Its purpose was to track vehicles during manufacturing; it was designed to allow high-speed component scanning … The Quick Response system became popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes.”

Lucid Green’s vision has always been to provide trust and transparency in the cannabis ecosystem. Lucid Green’s LucidIDs utilize QR codes. Lucid Green implemented LucidIDs for the cannabis industry to reduce costs, increase transparency, and drive revenue in 2018. The pandemic has certainly boosted the growth of QR codes - the quick and easy scanning technology.

With ubiquitous utilization of QR codes comes some potential exploitation. There has been significant media coverage creating alarms regarding QR scanning-safety as shown here. But those concerns are circumvented by the technological design of LucidIDs.

If you see a cannabis package with a LucidID, know it is safe and here is why:

The LucidIDs are generated by Lucid Green’s secure data asset management system, LucidSource. If you have the LucidID App downloaded on your scanning phone (here for IOS and here for Android), authentic LucidIDs are verified, and fake LucidIDs are detected. Instead of opening up a browser page, scanning a LucidID opens your LucidID App and the LucidID is tested for authenticity. This implementation is automatic on your smartphone. The verification is directed to the LucidID App as opposed to just opening a browser. Any QR codes mocked or counterfeited will not be recognized by the LucidID App. Instead of opening up a browser page, you are presented with the following alert:

Much of this was covered in a recent article, “How to Stop Counterfeit Cannabis Products.” If you want to be 100% safe scanning LucidIDs, download the LucidID App. This is another feature that supports Lucid Green’s mission of building a standard for trust and transparency in the cannabis ecosystem.
